Should School Uniforms Be Made Compulsory Essay

School uniform is a standard set of clothes which is worn by a group of people. However, more and more people say that it may not be a must for students to wear a school uniform. People have debated this issue, many times. We should get to know both the advantages and disadvantages of wearing a school uniform. School uniform is an identification for students. It is a form of respect to the school.

There are some advantages of wearing a school uniform compulsorily. Firstly, wearing a school uniform can save the students’ money and time on choosing what to wear to school because there is no need to purchase different clothing to wear. Also, they don’t need to decide what to wear in the morning. It is a place for study, not a place for fashion. Secondly, wearing a school uniform can prevent mental comparisons between students. They will not be envious of other classmates clothing e.g expensive brand named or beautiful clothing because all the students must wear the same clothing, there are no comparisons.

Once you wear a school uniform and enter the school, all students will become equal. Thirdly, school uniform shows which school you belong to and it looks: neat, tidy and professional. It shows the tidiness and discipline of the school and decreases discrimination among peers. Therefore, wearing school uniform is good for students. On the contrary, there are voices from the students saying that they want more freedom, by wearing casual clothing. There are some disadvantages of wearing school uniform compulsorily.

Firstly, you wear comfortable and fashionable clothing that expresses your personality because school uniform is a uniform style. School uniform is rigid, and all the people look the same and cannot express their personality. It would inhibit the students feelings of self-expression. Secondly, if you don’t wear school uniform, you will spend too much money buying different clothes to wear to school every day. Casual clothing is our necessities in our life, we have to buy them. Therefore, we should be able to wear it at school. Therefore, they don’t need to spend extra money to buy a school uniform, to wear.

Thirdly, students can wear any style and colour that they prefer. They can make themselves look beautiful and fashionable. It is good for students to show their individuality and it makes students feel more self-confident. It also fills the whole school, with colour, instead of wearing a school uniform that seems very rigid, and boring.

As a conclusion, coins have two different sides, similar to the opposing opinions about having a compulsory school uniform. There are some advantages and disadvantages about wearing school uniform. Although, wearing a school uniform is a better choice for students, a uniform can represent the identification of students, the respect to the school and also the respect of being a student. A school is a place for students to learn, to study. Students should concentrate on their studies, not what they are wearing.

There is a great diversity of opinion among people on whether or not schools should force students to wear uniform recently. Some say that wearing uniform gets rid of students’ creativity or that the coercive measure is not good for their emotions. However, despite this dissent, I think wearing uniform is good for several reasons.

First, wearing uniform can get rid of discrimination among students. There are big differences in economic circumstances of each student’s family. Some students come to school in different clothes every day or in good brand luxury items while students who cannot afford to them may suffer from deprivation because they can’t. Most public schools not private schools to which students in a similar economic situation go cannot escape from this negative possibility. Having this thought of comparing themselves with others is a very unfortunate thing and may hurt students who have sharp sensitivity during adolescence.

Second, uniform has a positive effect in that it establishes students’ identity. Sense of belonging during an adolescence period helps them develop their egos and forms sense of kinship with peers by defining the group to which they belong while giving them psychological stability. All uniforms shown in different groups have a similar purpose. Military uniform or company uniform exists in order to expect a positive effect by establishing such a sense of kinship and identity.

Lastly, school uniform makes students look like students. Of course people who think it hinders their expressiveness may not agree, but looking student-like has a lot of advantages. First of all, it can help their safety. If they are in a dangerous situation, it can let people recognize the school they belong to and what class of students they are. Also, making them look student-like can create an academic atmosphere. Freewheelingness is good but if appropriate control is kept, a calm atmosphere is created and students can devote themselves to study...
